HERAKLION CRETE

PREFECTURE OF HERAKLION

The prefecture of Herakleion (Its capital is Herakleion city) has a total surface area of 120 km² and is located between the prefectures of Rethymno and Lasithi. Bordered on the east by the prefecture of Lassithi and on the west by the prefecture of Rethymnon, Herakleion is between the Cretan Sea on the north and the Libyan Sea on the south.

Herakleion can be considered for the largest part as flat and semi-mountainous. The Venetian harbor, with the fortress of Koules looming at its entrance, is located to the left of the current harbor. In the city’s center, the square featuring the Morosini Fountain and the famous Lions are the city’s most photographed attractions and the crowdiest hangout for both locals and visitors. Around the square there are many modern coffee places where one can taste the traditional “bougatsa”, shop from famous brands and all the traditional Cretan products and visit and the historic church of St. Mark, dating back to the 12th century.

ACTIVITIES

Water Sports: In Gazi and Herakleion there are two sailing clubs which organize excursions to the northern beaches of Crete and the island of Dia located to the north of the city.
Excursions: Many travel agencies in the city offer all sorts of excursions to Knossos and Phaistos as well as cities outside the prefecture such as Rethymno, Chania, etc.
Sea trips: During the tourist season (April-October) trips are organized at the island of Spinalonga, Santorini and many other tourist attractions.
Swimming: Enjoy the sandy beaches of Northern Heraklion: Agia Pelagia, Amnissos, Amoudara, Analipsi, Hersonissos, Kalamaki, Karteros, Gouves, Lygaria, Malia, Palaiokastro, Stalida, Hani Kokkini. Also, if you prefer southern Crete you can visit the beaches of Komos, Tympaki, Matala, etc.
Shopping: On the main road of Herakleion you can find a variety of traditional products, souvenirs, clothes, restaurants etc. After all, Herakleion is the biggest city in Crete.
Walks: A selection of organized walks to all areas of Crete is available. Walk on deserted paths and follow along rivers crossing traditional settlements.
Golf: The Crete Golf Club, located in Hersonissos about 20 km from Herakleion International Airport, is one of the major tourist infrastructure projects in Crete.

The course, which occupies a total area of 720 acres, features18 paths (“holes”) and is considered “Desert Golf” (played in a natural environment). Designed according to international standards, it meets and exceeds the highest demands of players, making it suitable for plenty of international tournaments. The course features a driving range with 38 player locations and a modern Golf Academy.
